Creagogology is valuable in breaking and refreshing patterns

Creagogology, a compound word of create and agogics, is introduced in the Netherlands in 2000 by Eric van der Wal (Eric is creagologist– guide for change). Using this philosophy you learn to understand your own role and those of others in interpersonal processes. The phase that people are in, their habits and the interactions with others are methodological addressed. Hundreds of people are now creagogologicaly on their way to change.

“It’s nice when life can be enriching and becomes clear, what our role is. And from there we can see what we can mean for ourselves and others.”

Following your heart is being open to joy as well as dissatisfaction. When life is going well and there are no prominent things emotionally, then satisfaction is not being considered. If anything of substance is brought into the emotional life then there is action. Then the think-tank runs at full speed and starts the internal conversation and we make an assessment of what we do and what we see and experience (our look and feel). It is a beginning of awareness. Creagogology deals with these awareness processes.

"Prolonged sitting in a situation that is not right for you is unhealthy and can even cause death!" So says Arthur Docters van Leeuwen in Inspiring Encounters.

The philosophy
Creagogology is a philosophy that stimulates people to live through processes of awareness with one primary goal: satisfaction in a pleasant and productive life. Pleasant is when the circumstances where we are in appeal to us, give energy and the obstacles that we face are to overcome. We are productive when our efforts produce tangible results.

For some people that means working on their stamp collection and for other people that means spending the day with their grandchildren. You can also think about having a good conversation with one of your colleagues that you, until that moment, never spoke. Or closing a global deal as a salesman.

All those things are possible when the cohesion between the need, experience and interest that fit the life phase, the environment and the interrelations is optimal. These aspects together make a suitable total. Nevertheless, too often it happens that people find themselves in situations that are not. This results in loss of energy and frustration, and that is unhealthy in the long run.

The situation
From the perspective of creagogology the environment includes housing, equipment, furniture, processes, systems, odor and temperature. And it includes people with their (personal and interpersonal) typical habits and automatisms - persistent patterns that have emerged over time. The sum of all this creates a certain atmosphere (look and feel). In the perception of one person this can be stimulating, while someone else doesn’t feel comfortable.

Being-phase-aware
Creagogology sees any road to any goal as a process that consists of phases. In any phase the individual constantly checks his or her positive and negative stimuli, this in relation to the interaction with the environment and what goes on inside (the situation). It’s an intrinsic game of supply and demand, which initially happens unconsciously. There are distinct phases related to the development of our environment (like our neighborhood, the school of our children, the company where we work, and our sports association) and the people within. These phases pass through randomly and can’t be defined in advance. So to decide whether or not the phase that we are in fits our environment and the people within, initially happens on basis of our feeling. It’s our situational experience.

When this intrinsic checking often leads to feelings of displeasure, then it’s good to ask ourselves: what happen, do I do the things I want to do? What offers my environment, am I still connected to the people that I hang out with? The conclusion can be: that the concerning situation doesn’t fit us anymore. We may have outgrown the situation. By recognizing and accepting that, there arises perspective.

That is thinking phase-aware: the essence of creagogology. It can help people on their way to recreate a situation that fits them. So that it becomes possible to realize their new goals. For completeness and to avoid misunderstandings, it’s important to notice that development within one and the same phase is possible in every way: in other words it’s regularly possible to realize improvement and change without stepping out of the present situation physically.

The three steps phase-awarenessprocess

1. Phase-minded thinking
Phase-minded functioning
2. Phase-aware thinking
Phase-aware functioning
3. Being phase-aware

The awareness that is needed is a psychological process and also consists of several distinctive phases. Our senses, thoughts and impressions play a big role in living through those phases and matching reflection. And since we are “stuck” in our body, the physiology is also of importance in how we feel, what we perceive and how we react. The filter of physiology colors the outlines of reality. That is very important to realize.

Eat well, drink well, exercise, doing fun things, love and having success keeps us energetic and promotes our waking and sleeping rhythms. This way we can start our day fresh, without distorted perception by undesirable physiological processes. Signals of distortion include: depression, anxiety, catastrophizing, being irritated and physical complaints. Or drastic and often non-constructive actions like: running away, insults, quarreling, brawling and binging.

When resources like sleeping pills, antidepressants, vacation, absenteeism and relationship pauses don’t work, then there’s no way out and it’s time to search for the real solution. At least, if we want to live our lives in a pleasant and productive way to get satisfaction out of it. Life art is what we are talking about.

Creagogology is a fine philosophy with matching methods to start awareness and summon refreshing thoughts through introspection. This way new ideas arise. From there the focus is on gradually shaping those ideas.

Aligning people and phases and the associated needs, experience and interests, is a dynamic process. Starting point is always the status quo. From there a number of steps has to be taken until the vitality has been achieved. This is done using the following analysis model and is based on three pillars: Process, System and Cooporation (PSC).

Process is an evolution towards any purpose and consists of phases. As with the path of life of people and organizations. It was decided that these phases are not to define in advance. This gives people the opportunity to freely associate. Thereby gain insight into their own need, experience and interest.

System is formed by people who work or live together. Within this there are distinct subsystems. Systems have their own habits, mechanisms and patterns. As humor, task roles and leadership style.

Cooperation is a relationship that people have with each other. The nature is diverse. The analysis of the relationship describes how the relations are and the interaction between them. And whether or not it is an effective whole.
